THE ABERDEEN JOURNEY. THE INFLUENCE OF ROAD DESIGN STANDARDS ON GOODS VEHICLE JOURNEY TIMES AND TRANSPORT COSTS FROM AND TO ABERDEEN

This is a revised edition of a report produced in 1975, taking account of current circumstances. The calculation of total transport costs - standing costs and running costs - is explained, and methods for calculating journey times for various standards of highway are presented. An attempt is made to estimate total annual freight cost savings for operations out of Aberdeen. The effect of eec driving regulations after 1 January 1981 is indicated. Standing costs chargeable to through journeys from Aberdeen to Dunblane in relation to various regimes based on drivers' hours and route improvement standards are tabulated. These indicate the need for road improvements to dual carriageway and/or motorway standards to maintain current cost levels under eec driving regulations. (TRRL) screening techniques are discussed. This report was presented to the 5th symposium on recent developments in activation analysis, oxford, 17 to 21 July, 1978.
