WATER-BASED COATINGS FOR PROTECTION OF STEEL STRUCTURES
Various water-based paints were evaluated by subjecting them to accelerated exposure tests according to ASTM methods. These tests indicated that water-based top coats generally performed satisfactorily when applied over an organic zinc-rich primer. Similar tests made on waterbased primers and complete water-based systems indicated that some of these coatings may be equal to or better than conventional solvent-based alkyd type paints. Additional full scale field evaluations are currently being planned to further evaluate some of the water-based coatings. (FHWA)
