Sustainable Infrastructure through an Effective Quality Management System

On mega transportation projects effective quality management system is essential for ensuring facility permanence, life cycle performance, low maintainability, and interface consistency between the component construction contracts in the project. It takes a concerted and sustained collaborative effort to ensure effective quality management on mega transportation projects. The success of the project is primarily decided by effective control over planning, design, and construction and installation quality while maintaining scheduled progress. This paper reviews the quality assurance and quality control approaches adopted by public agencies on some of the major transportation projects in the U.S. and identifies some of their best practices and benefits of some of the approaches. A discussion on the total quality management system adopted by the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) is presented in the paper. The authors’ believe that the presented system could serve as a guide for successful implementation of quality management processes on very large and complex infrastructure projects.
