MEASUREMENT OF THE FACTORS WHICH DETERMINE ROAD HOLDING

MESURE DES FACTEURS DETERMINANTS POUR LA TENUE DE ROUTE

Given the complexity of the relationships which determine the behaviour of the system driver - vehicle - environment, the subjective evaluation made by engineers using test rigs remains up to now the main means of determining quality of road holding. The rapid development of measurement techniques has led to decisions being made based on results of measurement on the highway. The required conditions are that the measurements deal with actual driving situations, that they are reproducible and feasible, and finally that their results show a very high level of correlation with subjective evaluations. The article describes measurements used to evaluate road holding: acceleration; angles of roll, of pitching, of drift, and the manoeuvres on the highway for these measurements: driving in circles, braking on curves, vibration of driving wheel etc. (TRRL)
