The author discusses the historical developments leading to the detection systems currently employed offshore and in addition, examines a variety of methods by which the presence of inflammable gases may be detected. The detection of inflammable gases as an integral part of the protection system of oil production platforms has increased in importance over the last decade. The author examines why such detection systems are required and how, fundamentally, they are used as part of an overall protection system.
