SCOUR AT BRIDGE PIERS: EFFECTS OF GRADING AND LAYERING
The paper describes the development of scour at bridge piers and describes methods of estimation of the depth of general scour and of the localised scour due to constriction effects. This is followed by a discussion of the development of clear-water scour at a bridge pier and of the effects on the maximum depth of clear-water scour of the grain-size distribution, of the grain size relative to pier diameter, of the pier size and depth of flow, and of the layering of the bed material.
