FOG AND SMOKE, FACTORS AFFECTING TRAFFIC FLOW AND TRAFFIC SAFETY

LA NIEBLA Y EL HUMO COMO ELEMENTOS QUE AFECTAN A LA FLUIDEZ Y A LA SEGURIDAD DEL TRAFICO

This report deals with 4 clearly defined topics. Topic (1) concerns fog, its formation, types as a function of temperature, day and night visibility, scales of density with results of experimental tests, fog zones and their influence on road accidents and on traffic parameters. Topic (2) concerns smoke as an independent phenomenon and comprises aspects such as aerosols, their formation, dimensions and weight, dynamics of atmospheric particles, calculation of smoke opacity, main types of smoke, and influence of smoke on safety, comfort, etc. Part (3) deals with the fog-smoke interaction and contains personal experiences by the author on the a17 barcelona-france motorway where visibility is sometimes nil. Part (4) outlines measures to fight these phenomena so harmful to traffic flow and safety. (TRRL)
