SOME PROPERTIES OF CEMENT-CONCRETE PAVEMENTS FROM THE ASPECT OF TRAFFIC SAFETY
NEKE OSOBINE CEMENTNO-BETONSKIH KOLOVOAZ SA GLEDISTA BEZBEDNOSTI SAOBRACAJA
The article states that beside the engineering-economic factors, the safety of traffic is one of the primary factors in choosing the type of pavement construction. The basic driving-dynamical property of the pavement is its capability of holding the vehicle, in other words, the magnitude and unalterability of forces of adhesion between the vehicle and the pavement. Every change in the driving-dynamical properties of the pavement are, as a rule, accompanied by an increase in the number of traffic accidents. The increase is evident particularly at points where the pavement is wet, heated or fouled with earth, petrol etc. Properly constructed cement-concrete and asphaltic concrete pavements have similar properties with regard to holding a vehicle on the road while they are new and dry. With the change of conditions, when the pavement becomes old, wet or heated, a substantial decrease in the road capability of holding a vehicle takes place in the case of asphalt pavements, but not with portland-cement concrete pavements. Evenness of surfacing is another important property for safe driving, and in this respect cement-concrete pavements show little changes, and remain even, if they are properly constructed. Safety of driving also depends upon the light and heat reflection from the pavement. As regards light reflection, especially at night, the advantage is with pavements with a high degree of reflection, the so-called illuminated pavements. A low degree of reflection of dark pavements causes heating of the pavement and the formation of air layers of uneven density, which causes deflection of light rays and a shifting of the angle at which an object is seen- an effect called "fata morgana". The author concludes that cement-concrete pavements, as regards driving-dynamical and light and optical properties are in practice better than asphalt pavements. (TRRL)
