OBSERVED FAILINGS IN DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF BRIDGES
UOCENI NEDOSTACI KOD PROJEKTOVANJA, GRADJENJA I ODRZAVANJA MOSTOVA
The lack of financial means and the non-existence of permanent and systematic efforts for the maintenance of bridges, brings about rapid deterioration and even collapse of certain structures. During the last ten years, the collapse of four important bridges has taken place in the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, accompanied by great material losses. A tabular review is given in an appendix of the causes of collapse of 143 bridges in the world. The most frequent cause of collapse is the scour under the foundation. Special attention should be paid to the aesthetic treatment of bridges but there is no need for bridge architects, so the responsibility of designers is increased in respect of their own observations. Bridge building suffers from many failings also and there are often unacceptably poor cements and concretes used. The stability and durability of many reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridges which have just been completed on the Ibar arterial road and on the railway line Beograd-Bar are jeopardised. The author suggests that new regulations be introduced as speedily as possible for the design and loading of road bridges. (TRRL)
