COMPARISON OF THE DURABILITY OF ASPHALT AND CEMENT-CONCRETE PAVEMENTS BUILT BEFORE THE WAR IN OUR COUNTRY

UPOREDJENJE TRAJNOSTI ASFALTNIH I CEMENTNO-BETONSKIH KOLOVOZNIH KONSTRUKCIJA IZVEDENIH PRIJE RATA U NASOJ ZEMLJI

In the pre-war period a considerable number of road lengths have been built in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia with cement-concrete pavements. Experiences gained in the building of motorway in Germany were followed, with strict control of materials and workmanship. For the purpose of investigating the possibilities of laying concrete slabs over existing crushed stone pavements, on the Pancevo-Vrsac road, a large number of experimental road stretches were constructed, with pavement designs. Cement-concrete pavements constructed on these stretches, which were built before the war, gave excellent performance, and some of these are even to-day in a satisfactory condition. The author concludes that experiences with the earlier built concrete pavements are without doubt encouraging. The interests of the profession and of road economy demand that in all major projects on the arterial road network, the use of cement-concrete pavements should be considered together with other types.
