RECENT TENDENCIES IN PAVEMENT DESIGN IN VIEW OF THE REDUCTION OF THICKNESS OF ASPHALT LAYERS AND THE INCREASE OF THICKNESS OF BASE-COURSES WITH SURFACINGS STABILISED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDER

NOVIJE TENDENCIJE KOD PROJEKTIRANJA KOLNICKIH KONSTRUKCIJA S OBZIROM NA SMANJENJE DEBLJINE ASFALTNIH SLOJEVA I POVECANJE DEBLJINE HIDRAULICKIM VEZIVOM STABILIZIRANIH NOSIVIH SLOJEVA

In this paper the authors describe the tendencies which have been present during the last few years in pavement design. These are indicated by the fact that asphalt layers are becoming thinner, while thicknesses of underlying layers are increasing. The reasons for this development are both economic and technical. The increase in prices of petrol and bitumen has resulted in attempts to reduce the thickness of asphalt, thereby reducing the costs. Another reason for this occurrence is the fear of excessive plastic deformations. In order to test the value of pavements with thinner asphalt surfacings and thicker base-courses of granular materials stabilised with hydraulic binders, analyses have been carried out on the basis of theoretical calculation of stresses. The conclusion is drawn that comprehensive studies of these tendencies should be undertaken, at other locations, on trial road stretches, so that these might also be included in our survey. /TRRL/
