EYE INJURIES CAUSED BY VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
AUGENVERLETZUNGEN DURCH KRAFTWAGENUNFAELLE
641 people who had suffered injuries to the eyes in accidents were examined: in 85 percent of the cases the injuries had been caused by shattered windscreen glass. A third of all injuries consisted of cuts to the eyelids, and there were a similar number of perforating bulbus injuries. A practically complete loss of function occurred with 16 percent of the sclera deformations, 17.7 percent of the cornea deformations, and 48.7 percent of the cornea-sclera injuries. Over 70 percent of the eye injuries occurred in the age group 18-25 years (42.3%) and 25-35 years, and the proportion quickly declines with increasing age, independent of sex. Nearly all the clinically treated patients had not worn a safety belt. (TRRL)
