EXTENSION OF THE THEORY OF RESTRAINED TORSION TO MULTI-CELLULAR OPEN OR CLOSED SECTIONS
EXTENSION DE LA THEORIE DE LA TORSION GENEE AUX SECTIONS MULTICELLULAIRES OUVERTES OU FERMEES
The theory of restrained torsion which it is necessary to apply to a large number of prismatic units in a thin shell is very difficult to use manually in the case of complicated cross sections. The article proposed the general method of calculation for stresses in these sections which is based on the minimization of elastic energy of the section, written in a suitable form. The section is systematically broken down into elements of thin slices, for which the expression for energy is simple but in doing so redundant variables are introduced subject to conditions of compatibility based on the angles between the slices themselves. These angles may be described in terms of the theory of graphs and this leads to a problem of functional quadratic minimization under linear stresses resolved by a lagrange method of mulipliers.
