DARK ADAPTATION IN PASSENGER TRANSPORT

DIE DUNKELANPASSUNG IM PERSONENFOERDERNDEN VERKEHR

The results are reported of comprehensive studies of twilight visual acuity with a new, completely automatic, adaptation test instrument (nyktomat), carried out on people working on the German railways. In the age group up to 40 years, 2 percent did not achieve the desired value, whereas in the group up to 65 years, 15 percent did not pass the test. The authors are of the opinion that in adaptation studies of young applicants for licences, peak performances of twilight vision should be demanded, so that less failures occur in later years. Increasing and faster day and night traffic is given as a reason for these demands. (TRRL)
