EXPERIENCES WITH 12 METER LONG SEMI-SUBMERGED CATAMARAN (SSC) MARINE ACE AND BUILDING OF SSC FERRY FOR 446 PASSENGERS

The development of the semi-submerged catamaran (SSC) at the Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Comapny is reviewed and its future potential is discussed. Theoretical and experimental researches conducted to develop the structural, design method, power transmission system and motion control system are briefly mentioned. The 12 metre long experimental SSC Marine Ace was built in 1977 and extensive sea trials were conducted. The original twin strut per side configuration was later converted to the single strut per side and additional sea trials were conducted. Developments of this SSC Marine Ace and some sea trials results are discussed. Successsful operation of this experimental craft led Mitsui to develop and design the prototye SSC ferry carrying 446 passengers. Completion (at the date of writing) was due in August 1979 at Mitsui's Chiba yard. An outline of the vessel's design is given and some future applications of the SSC are also indicated.
