MODERNIZED WELDING TECHNOLOGY IN SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRIES

This paper presents an overview of shipbuilding and welding technologies both during the period of expansion in ship size when VLCCs were the main type of construction, and during the transition period when the shipbuilding character changed towards the production of very specialised ships such as LNG and LPG carriers. It also covers future trends in welding technology relating to the presently emergent state of shipbuilding, where there is a need for high performance structures and corresponding specialization in structural materials including special alloys of higher strength and thickness.
