The Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer of the British Railways Board, K. Taylor, explains how staff reorganization to give engineers responsibility for the design, performance and maintenance of a vehicle led to new designs and refinements of existing designs. Examples are given of some equipment which British Rail has produced with lowest total life cost as the primary target.
