BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS SPREAD WITH PRECOATED CHIPPINGS: A HIGHWAY TECHNIQUE

LE CLOUTAGE DES MATERIAUX ENROBES: UNE TECHNIQUE ROUTIERE

The paper to the Highway Engineering Meeting in June 1978 at Lille presents a brief history of bituminous surfacings spread with precoated chippings or the inclusion of aggregates with very thin chippings, termed "clous" (nails), in bituminous mixtures or "matrices" or "support mixtures". It was introduced in the United Kingdom during the 1960'S (hot rolled asphalt) then in South Africa and in Sweden by 1963, it was first used in France in 1964 and its use extends gradually. In 1977, made up according to the so-called lpc formula for bituminous mixtures 0/6 intended for maintenance, the results were so good as to lead setra and LCPC in the second half of 1978 to draw up and to adopt a recommendation for laying surface dressings using precoated chippings. A brief review is given of experiences obtained on sites in the United Kingdom, in Belgium, in South Africa, Sweden and various regions of France (Nord pas de Calais, Doubs, Jura, Creuse, etc). The essential points of the recommendations mentioned are presented as well as the manufacture and the laying of bituminous surfacings spread with precoated chippings. (TRRL)
