INERT GAS/CRUDE OIL WASHING SYSTEMS: MEETING THE IMCO STANDARDS

Tougher safety and anti-pollution measures for tankers, introduced by the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (and anticipated by U.S. regulations,) dictate the installation of suitable shipboard inert gas systems and crude oil washing facilities. In this feature we detail the proposed standards and their application, and provide a guide to the equipment available to meet them, either in new buildings or retrofits. A suppliers list is included. Tanker safety and pollution control are also discussed in the Last Word section of Motor Ship, page 150.
