U.S. RESEARCH INTO SHIP HANDLING SIMULATORS FOR MARINER TRAINING AND LICENSING

The paper reports the conclusions of the initial phase of a study regarding the role of simulators. Major project tasks are identified: 1) a deck officer behavioural data base was assembled to define the ship handling skills to be achieved by masters and chief mates in the form of specific functional objectives (SFO). 2) The current deck officer licensing practices, worldwide, were reviewed to identify issues pertinent to the use of simulators, 3) training specifications were investigated, 4) a framework for ship handling training program development was produced, 5) simulator characteristics were investigated and 6) research issues were identified.
