DIESEL-ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEM OF RUSSIAN RIVER ICEBREAKERS
The last of the six river icebreakers, which Sudimport in Moscow ordered with the Finnish Wartsila yard in 1975, was recently handed over to the USSR customer. AEG-TELEFUNKEN supplied the complete electric systems for all vessels including the power supply systems and the special equipment, for an order value of approximately 22 million Deutschmarks. These systems were rated in accordance with the highest class of automation of the RSFSR (USSR Ship Register of River Navigation). The river icebreakers are in operation on the large Siberian rivers Lena, Yenisei, and Ob, so that the shipping season, which hitherto ended approximately in October, is prolonged by about six weeks.
