HINKLE YARD--EFFICIENT, ECONOMICAL, AND MODERN
This paper describes the innovative use of digital computers to efficiently control freight car classification operations and information processing functions at Union Pacific Railroad's unique, new yard at Hinkle, Oregon. In addition to discussing the computer hardware configuration, the paper separates the major central process control system into its key subsystems of automatic retarder control, automatic switching control, and process backup.
