CONSTRUCTION OF THE CASTIGLIONE TUNNEL ON THE NEW ROME-FLORENCE DIRECT LINE

LA COSTRUZIONE DELLA GALLERIA DI CASTIGLIONE DELLA NUOVA LINEA DIRETTISSIMA ROMA-FIRENZE

The tunnel of Castiglione, on the fast line Rome-Florence, now under construction, was carried out for the whole of the 7,390 meters using Robbins "moles" with closed shield, with an excavating arm and with a horse-shoe section, thus being the first tunnel in the world with an opening of about 100 sq m constructed with this method. The very good results achieved, which can be synthesized in an average progress of 16.5 per day (and tunnel finished) are the result of the careful preliminary study of the terrain involved in the drilling and the consequent optimal design of the machine and the subsidiary equipment. A description is given of all the phases of the work, together with the numerous controls, in the laboratory and in situ, carried out on the materials, and the completed works.
