REVIEW OF THE STATUS OF ADVANCED PROPULSION SYSTEMS FOR ELECTRIFIED RAILROAD OPERATION IN GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND

This paper presents a summary of the status of advanced propulsion work for ac electrified railroad application in Germany and Switzerland. Advanced propulsion systems under development by electrical manufacturers in these countries are three-phase ac asynchronous motor drives including both pulse width modulated inverters and phase sequence inverters on the motor side and various types of controlled rectifiers such as sector, pulse, and four quadrant control which are used to reduce harmonics and improve power factor on the line side of the propulsion unit. These new systems are discussed with respect to potential application on electrified railroads in the United States. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems when compared to present propulsion systems are highlighted in terms of performance, energy consumption, reliability, maintenance requirements and cost.
