MULTIPLE MICRO/MINI SYSTEM FOR REAL-TIME RAIL FLAW CLASSIFICATION

A multiple micro/mini computer system is described for application to the problem of real time rail flaw detection and classification. Past rail flaw detection/classification has been done on semi-automatic basis, where an operator takes an active role in the classification process, resulting in slow, interactive testing schemes. Based on a prior real time prototype system and on results of rail flaw classification research, the proposed distributed system resolves two major system design problems; management of an extremely high data rate, data efficient implementation of automated detection and classification of the major types of rail flaws. Included in the description are the system organization, primary operational parameters, and their major dependencies.
