STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF LIMESTONE FINES ON THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE

ETUDE DE L'INFLUENCE DES FINES CALCAIRES SUR LE FACTEUR DURABILITE DES BETONS HYDRAULIQUES

Limestone fines are characterized by their activity coefficient. The author lists the tests he has selected to evaluate the durability of concrete containing limestone fines: (1) repetitive freezing-thawing cycle tests; (2) resistance to immersion in a sulphate solution; (3) behaviour in a sulphated environment under alternate drying-immersion cycles. An experimental study was conducted of limestone mortars with a variable proportion of fines of varying quality; (1) study process; (2) test results; (3) analysis of test results are described. It is concluded that limestone fines which do not contain active colloidal elements do not alter the durability of mortar and concrete, and that as soon as fines are active they rapidly become harmful.
