THE SENSIBLE USE OF PRE-COATINGS IN BITUMINOUS ROAD CONSTRUCTION

SINNVOLLE ANWENDUNG VON VORSPRITZMITTELN IM BITUMINOESEN STRASSENBAU

In multi-layer construction of bituminous pavements a strong bonding of the individual layers produces maximum strength and durability. This can also be achieved by means of aggregate interlock due to thorough rolling and by means of adhesive bonding of the various layers. The suitability of various bituminous pre-coatings is discussed. Suitable materials are cold applied anionic or cationic bitumen-emulsions or adhesives. The adhesive is a thin emulsion which is sprayed on with 2 to 3 mm diameter jet nozzle at a rate of 0,15 to 0,30 kg per square metre. In weighing up all the advantages and disadvantages it appears that the bonding adhesive is a material with universal application. It is pointed out that the danger of enrichment due to the bonding coat increases as the thickness of the next layer increases and the greater the voids content of the mix. A uniform application by skilled personnel is very important. No traffic should be permitted after application of the bonding coat to the base. Bonding coats must not be used under wearing coats of gussasphalt. (TRRL)
