The apparatus described measures the contact geometric characteristics between tyre and road and gives data on the aptitude of the surfacing to water drainage under the tyre. The principle is as follows: a very thin film of white paint is projected on a smooth tyre. The tyre comes in contact with the road surfacing and gives an image of this contact. The device continuously supplies contact images and real-time analyses. Details are given of this apparatus (paint projection system, detection system, tyre cleaning system) and of the processing of the signals. The first tests were carried out with a model to check the feasibility of the device. The tests showed that satisfactory contact images were obtained, that the principle of analysis was valid and that it enabled the images to be processed in real time. But is appeared that measurements were sensitive to various adjustments of the apparatus: rate of flow of paint, development of the optical detector. (TRRL)
