SUCCESSFUL BATTERY POWERED URBAN DELIVERY VEHICLE DEMONSTRATED IN SA
The article evaluates the application of the Silent Karrier battery-operated delivery vehicle in city conditions in South Africa. The vehicle has a maximum payload of 1780 kg, a range of 65 km and, with a maximum speed of 64 km/h is able to handle the work of 75% of petrol- or diesel-engined vans on town journeys. The potential saving of oil-based fuels is of particular significance for the South African economy. The CSIR has forecast that by 1990 some 29000 electric vehicles could be in operation. Eventually 26% of cars and 48% of buses could be replaced by electric vehicles for urban transport. (TRRL)
