HALF OXIDIZED BITUMEN AND ITS UTILIZATION IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF BITUMEN ROADS IN THE CSSR

HALBGEBLASENE BITUMEN UND DEREN VERWENDUNG IM BITUMINOESEN STRASSENBAU DER CSSR

In Czechoslovakia road construction binders (a 300, 200 and 80) are produced in the vacuum distillation process from Soviet phosphor and paraffin containing petroleum. The production of harder materials is not possible with this process; natural rock asphalt selenica was therefore admixed to bitumen a 200 and 80, respectively, until 1970. As this method is disadvantageous with respect to technical as well as economical considerations, and as it is unsuitable for production in large processing plant due to lack of homogenization, a start was made in 1970 with half oxidized bitumen. The process consisted of the familiar vacuum distillation process and subsequent oxidation; the results are described. After testing the material for a number of years a standard was produced in 1975, the specification of which is reproduced. Oxidized bitumen exhibits more advantageous attributes: a higher content of asphalt, a higher softening point and an improved flash and breaking point as well as better temperature sensitivity. There are no variations in the quality, e.g. for Bitumen AP 65 it was described as "good". The results for gussasphalt mixtures ap 45, 25 and 15 are also advantageous. Comparative values compiled in graph form show that the mixtures achieve the required hardness for gussasphalt for various purposes (surfaces for fast traffic, parks, crossings, bridges and walkways). Experimental roads were produced between 1970-74 with surfacing thicknesses of 2, 3 and 5 cm and kept under observation. The 1976 checks showed a completely satisfactory consistency (deformation, condition of surface, after-compaction). The total amount of half oxidized bitumen produced for construction work to 1976 was about 240000 T. (TRRL)
