GUSSASPHALT RECYCLING: FIRST TIME APPLICATION ON A FEDERAL MOTORWAY

GUSSASPHALT-RECYLING - ERSTMALS AUF EINER BUNDESAUTOBAHN

To date application of the repave method has proved disadvantageous for gussasphalt surfacing as there are difficulties in moving the existing material at the side and old gussasphalt has to be replaced by rolled asphalt mixes. The method for gussasphalt has been improved by the Voegele Asphalt-Surface-Reformer Super 1700 ARF which incorporates additional heating equipment. 20000 sq M were laid satisfactorily with the modified Voegele equipment on the federal motorway A3 Cologne-Wuerzburg. Construction methods and control tests are described. In comparison with the application of the repave method for rolled asphalt surfaces, for gussasphalt the amount of heating required is greater and the rate of construction is lower. Nevertheless, compared with conventional repair methods the saving is at least 50%. (TRRL)
