GRAVEL-CEMENT: (2) MANUFACTURE, LAYING AND BEHAVIOUR WHEN YOUNG. EXPERIMENTAL GRAVEL-CEMENT STRENGTHENING SITE UNDER TRAFFIC

GRAVES-CIMENT: 2) FABRICATION, MISE EN OEUVRE ET COMPORTEMENT AUX JEUNES AGES - CHANTIER EXPERIMENTAL DE RENFORCEMENT SOUS CIRCULATION ENGRAVE-CIMENT

Gravel-cement technique was used for the strengthening of the RN 117. The article reviews the controls and observations made: control of the manufacture of aggregates; mix-design studies according to current methodologies; control of the manufacture and laying of gravel-cement; non-destructive testing at different ages of gravel-cement between 1 day and 2 years. The results obtained show the homogeneity of the materials produced, the important fibres content (12 to 14% in gravel-cement), the high and even values of densities obtained on site. The homogeneity and rigidity of the support of the existing pavement permitted the construction of this strengthening structure without interruption to traffic. At 28 days, gravel-cement showed high mechanical characteristics already near to the final characteristics. At the end of 1977, gravel-cement was characterized by its even performance; the fine shrinkage cracking which occurred cannot yet throw doubts on the qualities of the structure. (TRRL)
