GAMMA RAY ANALYZER OF SOIL CORE SAMPLES IN CONTAINERS

This device permits to obtain a continuous and detailed profile of the bulk density of the material sampled. The non-destructive method of measurement is a direct application of that used for the analysis of bituminous core samples. This analyzer is easily movable on site and enables 1 m-long core samples 50 to 150 mm in diameter to be tested. The radioactive source is cesium 137; the electronic detecting unit comprises a scintiblock and a numerical integrator. The bulk density is recorded as a continuous graph as a function of soil sampling depth. In addition to giving the bulk density value and the nature of the soil layers, this recording enables homogeneous and heterogeneous zones of the samples to be distinguished and the quality of core sampling to be assessed. This device is systematically used in the soil mechanics laboratory on all core samples of soil. It facilitates the selection of the levels at which the samples are taken without making errors regarding the positions of the interface of various layers. (TRRL)
