EVALUATION OF SUITABILITY OF BITUMEN FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION WORK

BEWERTUNG DER EIGNUNG DER BITUMEN FUER DEN STRASSENBAU

The author reports on the specification for bitumen binders used in road construction work in the German Democratic Republic since 1956 and the differing experiences with bituminous binder materials of the post war period (lignite tars, bitumen of various crude oils with up to 3% paraffin content, cut back bitumen and emulsions). The specification of standard TGL 2835 in force since 1978 permits a paraffin content of 3%, blowing in of distillation residues in the manufacture of bitumen, admixing of large quantities of quality improving materials and the utilization of propane bitumen as well as mixing in of blown bitumen or other materials. In this connection there is also a report on a program of investigations for determining the suitability of different road bitumens (cohesion-temperature behaviour at static and dynamic loadings, ageing tendencies, rheological behaviour, stress-deformation behaviour), whose results are to form the basis for a further revision of the material specification for bitumen.
