ENGINEERING STRUCTURES: (2) PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES - PRETENSIONING, LOSS DUE TO THERMAL TREATMENT

LES OUVRAGES D'ART: 2) OUVRAGES EN BETON PRECONTRAINT - PRECONTRAINTE PAR PRE-TENSION, LA PERTE DUE AU TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE

This article describes the first part of the study of prestressing losses in the case of prestressing by pretensioning when the hardening of concrete is accelerated by thermal treatment. This treatment has an influence on the physico-mechanical properties of steel (relaxation) and concrete (shrinkage and creep) and therefore on the value of the final prestressing loss. It also results in a specific loss which occurs in two phases during the rise in temperature: the first is induced by expansion of the concrete which does not adhere to a reinforcement of constant length, hence a decrease in tension; it lasts up to the time when adhesion is effective; the second results from the hindered expansion of concrete that causes the premature progressive prestressing of the member still highly subject to deformation; the concrete modulus having markedly increased during the return to ambient temperature, the remelting loss of prestressing is partly irreversible. The theoretical pattern to which this analysis leads (pattern corroborated by experimental results) leads to the establishment of a calculation method that enables the value of the loss to be more accurately determined.
