ENGINEERING STRUCTURES: (2) PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES - INFLUENCE OF PRESTRESSING ON THE DAMPING OF TRANSVERSE VIBRATIONS IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDERS

LES OUVRAGES D'ART: 2) OUVRAGES EN BETON PRECONTRAINT - INFLUENCE DE LA PRECONTRAINTE SUR L'AMORTISSEMENT DES VIBRATIONS TRANSVERSALES DES POUTRES EN BETON PRECONTRAINT

This research is part of the study of structural dynamics. An attempt is made to establish a correlation between the real prestressing of a structural concrete member and its damping. Experiments were carried out on prestressed pretensioned beams. After describing the various types of damping and their characteristics, the authors give details of two methods of measuring damping: logarithmic decrement and frequency scanning. The analysis of the results showed that damping on the test beams was of the structural type, e.g. independent of the frequency. The shape of the damping curve as a function of prestressing shows that damping decreases when prestressing increases. This tendency remains until cracks appear in the concrete. Furthermore damping is affected by temperature but independent of the age of concrete after a stabilization period which lasts 2 months. (TRRL)
