ENGINEERING STRUCTURES - SURVEILLANCE AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING - MEASUREMENT OF BEARING PRESSURE

LES OUVRAGES D'ART - SURVEILLANCE ET AUSCULTATION - LA PESEE DES REACTIONS D'APPUI

In statically indeterminate prestressed concrete structures built according to a statical plan different from the final one, the time-related evolution in materials (shrinkage and creep of concrete, relaxation of steel) leads to a progressive modification of the statically indeterminate reactions. To neglect or underestimate this effect results in the appearance of disorders in structures already in service. This is a phenomenon not yet well understood. The evolution in time of the bearing pressure was measured on permanently instrumented structures, and design assumptions were thus verified. The measurement of the bearing pressure on structures opened to traffic and already showing defects is a means of detecting disorders. Measurement methods are described and their limitations discussed. (TRRL)
