ELASTIC CALCULATION OF STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS CREATED BY AN EMBANKMENT IN A LAYER OF LIMITED THICKNESS

CALCUL ELASTIQUE DES CONTRAINTES ET DES DEPLACEMENTS CREES PAR UN REMBLAI DANS UNE COUCHE D'EPAISSEUR LIMITEE

This article describes a calculation program for the displacements and stresses created by an embankment in a layer of limited thickness. The calculations are carried out according to the theory of isotropic linear elasticity for a soil consisting of one or two homogeneous layers resting on a rigid, rough substratum. The authors outline the method or resolution, e.g. break down of the unknown functions into Fourier series, thus permitting a semi-analytic resolution. Details are given of how to use the program and of the results obtained. In part two of the article a special use of the program is developed. It is known that the knowledge of the horizontal displacements of the soil under an embankment enables the structural design of piles which are situated in the vicinity of this embankment and are subjected to parasitic stresses, to be calculated. Six charts representing these displacements as a function of depth are presented. They correspond to 2 values of Poisson's ratio and to 3 positions of the pile in relation to the embankment.
