DURABILITY OF ASPHALT ROADS WHEN USED BY MILITARY TRAFFIC

BEWAEHRUNG VON ASPHALTSTRASSEN UNTER MILITAERISCHEM VERKEHR

Excessive wear of a road subjected to military traffic is mainly due to a large proportion of tracked vehicles, since although they exert a lower unit pressure, their peak pressures are higher. Additional wear is induced by the system of steering, which requires one or the other track to be braked when a change in direction is desired. In order to gain experience in the construction methods of asphalt roads for military use, experimental roads were produced in four different types of construction. After two years of usage it was found that all the constructions had worn well and no damage occurred, neither was there any deformation in the various layers. The amount of wear under considerable military traffic remained within acceptable limits. It is of interest that the extremely high temperatures experienced during the summer of 1976 had no particular effect. (TRRL)
