DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS ROADBASES WITH RESPECT TO FATIGUE

DIE BEMESSUNG VON ASPHALTTRAGSCHICHTEN HINSICHTLICH ERMUEDUNG

At the Research Centre of ESSO SAF in Mont-Saint-Aignan (France) a measuring method (ERDT = ESSO Road Design Technology) was developed for bituminous roadbases, where use was made of laboratory results of the directly measured dynamic modulus of elasticity, the dynamic creep test under lateral restraint and the uniaxial alternating load (tension/compression) fatigue test. An example of applying ERDT is shown by the design of a bituminous roadbase where it was particularly important to determine whether it would be possible to replace the bituminous roadbase containing 70% crushed particles by a bituminous roadbase of equal thickness made up with round particles. Only the fatigue method was used in these considerations, as it is the only authoritative method used in the design of bituminous roadbases. It transpired that the bituminous mixture with crushed rock could be replaced advantageously by a mixture with only partly crushed gravel with little binder content and a harder grade of bitumen. The calculations based on the ERDT method also showed that two equally graded road constructions, according to RSTO 75, exhibit a prominent difference in their fatigue behaviour and therefore in their lifetimes.
