An investigation was carried out into the influence of the bridge cross-section, type of railing and safety fence on the side wind above the carriageway and therefore on the safety of moving vehicles. An assessment was also made on wind conditions in the presence of a bridge pier. Model tests were carried out in a wind tunnel, and the distribution of wind velocity perpendicular to the carriageway was measured. The velocity in the blower stream on the models was constant and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bridge. Measurements were taken of the average wind velocities up to 4.5 M above the carriageway which cause a constant lateral load during the traversing of the bridge, and also of the variations in intensity of the side wind and the maximum wind velocities. In order to consider the influence of the angle of air flow relative to the plane of the carriageway, the angle of air flow direction was varied between plus/minus 15 degrees. By means of comparing the many recorded wind speed profiles, it is possible to make qualitative pronouncements on the cross-sectional form, types of parapets and guard rails. In some of the model cases, at certain points above the track, the speeds reached double the value of the incident flow. With the aid of meteorological data it is now possible to estimate the maximum wind velocities to be expected. Based on known aerodynamic shape factors of vehicles, calculations can be made which will allow the actual forces present to be assessed. (TRRL)
