WEAK POINTS IN THE LONG TERM PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

SCHWACHSTELLEN IN DER LANGZEITTAUGLICHKEIT VON NUTZFAHRZEUGEN

The analysis was derived from the results of periodic technical inspection of vehicles by the Tuev Rhineland, based on more than 150000 vehicles inspected in the age classes of up to 2 years, up to 4 years, up to 6 years and over 6 years. Because of the pronounced design and structural differences in the vehicles they were further subdivided into 4 weight classes - up to 3.5 t, 3.5-7.5 T, 7.5-16 t and over 16 t. The defects established in the main investigations are being evaluated at the Tuev Rhineland Computer Centre. The frequency of occurrence of the defects in each age and weight class was determined and compared with those of the other vehicle types. The results are illustrated in tables. Those cases in which there were considerable defects increase with the age of the vehicle. There was a wide scatter in the results from individual types of vehicles - between 11.2 percent and 32.7 percent after 2 years, and between 25 percent and 57.4 percent after 6 years. The difference was partly due to the various ways in which the vehicles were used. With respect to those faults which occur frequently, it is not easy to decide whether they are specific to a type of vehicle, or are caused by defects in design, use or maintenance. The latter can be remedied by better design, as shown by the safety analyses carried out in cars since 1971. These safety analyses provide a view of the conditions of all vehicles, showing how vehicles have changed from their originally approved condition. Type testing, periodic vehicle maintenance and statistical safety analysis are part of the strategic concept of the safety and reliability of vehicles. (TRRL)
