A survey is made of traffic education in Austria (1959 - 1978). The main points of the development to 1980 are discussed. After the pioneer period (1959 - 1962), when traffic education was taught in primary schools only occasionally, organized traffic education was integrated into the teaching plans of all types of schools up to the 5th form: traffic education in the upper forms of secondary schools has not been satisfactory so far. The exception is the current school experiment "intensive teaching in traffic education", in which 27000 pupils have taken part voluntarily already. The main point is the self-reliant and correct traffic participation as a pedestrian and as a cyclist. The experiment is to be extended to the 9th form level, the main part dealing with the steering of mopeds and small motorcycles, and the 11th and 12th form level (steering of a motor car). The additional education of techers initiated by the KFV and carried out by them between 1960 and 1978 has been taken over by educational and other teaching institutions, and it is continued by them on an obligatory basis. In addition to traffic education in schools, there is intensive traffic education in kindergartens. A practical part of traffic education is the voluntary cycle test (40000 to 50000 per year), which is run by the Austrian Youth Red Cross. Further, from 1958 onwards 41 school and 20 kindergarten traffic courses were established where practical exercises in traffic are provided. All activities in this field lead to a lowering in the number of accidents to children. (TRRL)
