SPECIAL STUDIES IN CONNECTION WITH THE VENTILATION OF THE ARLBERG ROAD TUNNEL

SPEZIELLE UNTERSUCHUNGEN IM ZUSAMMENHANG MIT DER BELUEFTUNG DES ARLBERG-STRASSENTUNNELS

The Arlberg road tunnel, 13972 M long, is the second longest mountain road tunnel. The ventilation was divided into six sections with two vertical ventilation shafts at Albona, depth 736 M and Maienwasen, depth 218 M. In order to isolate the most economic and aerodynamically favourable solution, full scale tests were carried out in the tunnel to determine the pressure drop from friction. The two outer ventilation sections are ventilated through stations at the portals, whilst the inner sections are ventilated through the two ventilation shafts. In order to achieve the technically most economical arrangement, model tests were evaluated. For the fresh air - exhaust units a mushroom-shape was chosen. Also studied was exhaust gas distribution in the 1437 M long adjacent avalanche gallery. (TRRL)
