SIMULATION USED TO DERIVE PROTECTION CRITERIA
DIE SIMULATION ALS ANSATZ ZUR ABLEITUNG VON SCHUTZKRITERIEN
Knowledge of the biomechanical limits or loading limits of the human being is important for determining ways of decreasing the consequences of accidents by means of improvements to vehicles. Tolerance limits and protection criteria for the frontal impact and the lateral impact are different. The author reports on previous studies and research with anthropometric dummies and cadavers. The equipment needed and the tests are described. To carry out basic research into protection criteria there is a need for test conditions which closely resemble the impact conditions and loadings of a real accident. The objectives of a research group, in which both the BAST and foreign and German institutes are involved, are outlined and the BAST impact testing facility is described. (TRRL)
