RESULTS OF A STUDY OF INDIVIDUAL ACCIDENTS BY A TEAM OF TECHNICIANS AND DOCTORS

ERGEBNISSE EINER UNTERSUCHUNG VON EINZELUNFAELLEN IM TEAM VON TECHNIKERN UND MEDIZINERN

The author reports on the possibilities and limits of accident simulation, particularly crash tests with anthropometric dummies. It is not possible to establish the limits of loading for tissues and internal organs. There are also restrictions in this respect with cadaver tests. The causes and consequences of injuries sustained in 395 accidents which resulted in 101 dead and 234 injured are reported, together with the distribution of the accidents over time and the relation between interior damage and injury. It is demonstrated that measured values are only relative and do not provide information on the types of injury to be expected in given accidents. They do however provide a framework for a car manufacturers' safety programme and lead the legislators to demand increased minimum safety standards inside vehicles. (TRRL)
