BEHAVIOUR OF GALVANIZED REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE

REVISION SOBRE EL COMPORTAMIENTO DE LAS ARMADURAS GALVANIZADAS EN EL HORMIGON

The authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the use of galvanized reinforcement in concrete. Possible causes of the corrosion of reinforcement sunk in concrete are examined, and the additional protection resulting from galvanizing under particularly aggressive conditions is considered. Mention is made of published data on tolerable limits of chloride for normal reinforcement, and the effects of concrete carbonation and differential aeration on the reinforcement are investigated. The influence of the hydrogen released during setting on the concrete-reinforcement adhesion and the risk of brittleness in reinforcement are studied. A list is appended of structures for which galvanized reinforcement was utilized. (TRRL)
