BASIS OF A METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE E MODULUS OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

GRUNDZUEGE EINES VERFAHRENS ZUR BESTIMMUNG DES E-MODULS VON STRASSENBAUSTOFFEN

The author treats the problem by describing the free vibrations of a mass on the pavement theoretically, and by carrying out experiments such that the e modulus of the subgrade can be calculated. The amount of damping is determined from the equations for the natural frequency, the spring constant, damping factor and system mass, and hence a formula for the calculation of the e modulus can be derived. It is possible to determine Poisson's ratio for the subgrade by the relatively simple experimental determination of the amount of damping. In conclusion there is a description of possibilities for experimental methods and an illustration of the principle for testing pavements and subsoils or samples in the laboratory. A method developed which requires only one variable parameter to be measured (frequency) is described as a suitable test for laboratory and insitu measurements. (TRRL)
