DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW PIGGYBACK VEHICLE FOR HORIZONTAL LOADING OF LORRIES AND TRAILERS. AN ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL NEED

DIE ENTWICKLUNG EINES NEUEN HUCKEPACKFAHRZEUGES FUER HORIZONTALE VERLADUNG VON LKW'S UND SATTELZUEGEN. EINE WIRTSCHAFTLICHE UND VERKEHRSPOLITISCHE NOTWENDIGKEIT

The expansion of combined transport in the Federal Republic of Germany means that suitable railway cars have to be available for piggyback transport. The paper describes the need for using a special car with respect to the objectives of combined transport. For initial requirements 800 cars are thought necessary. The commercial requirements of a piggyback vehicle are low investment and maintenance costs, a good useful load/dead load ratio and a favourable cost-use relation. The contact surface should be level and speeds of 120 km per hour should be possible. The new talbot low-floor car meets the needs of companies operating combined transport. The characteristics of this new car are described.
