SERVICE SUBJECT TO DELAY

This article concerns the present reconsideration of constructing a fixed channel crossing, which was dropped in 1975 on account of prohibitive cost. A prima facie case having been established for the crossing, the results of cost benefit analyses for four alternative schemes, the BR/SNCF single track tunnel, a double track tunnel, a road bridge, a road bridge and single track tunnel, are presented. Reference is made to high priority EEC transport links and possible financial aid for the channel link project. Some advantages of a bridge crossing rather than a tunnel are discussed.
